Summer Entertaining *GIVEAWAY*
This contest is (finally) closed! The winner is Melanie of Tales from the Crib. Congratulations, Melanie!
The Campbell Soup company wants to kick off summer by giving away a loaded picnic basket containing the following ingredients, perfect for preparing a lovely family picnic lunch (or a romantic picnic getaway for two, depending on how you roll):
- Recipes
- Swanson Chicken
- VIP Coupons for additional cans of Swanson Chicken
- Picnic basket for two with reusable plastic plates, cups, and utensils
- Mix-Ins for chicken salad like curry powder, dill, raisins, mayonnaise, and dijon mustard

See that!? How festive!
Here’s a bit of Musings of a Housewife trivia for you. I once temped for Campbells in my formal childless life. The Campbells headquarters is right across the river in Camden, New Jersey. It’s a very nice place to work (read: they paid more than most temp jobs), but it was kind of stuffy. The typical dress code was suits (even the administrative staff) and casual Friday was khakis and a nice sweater. Of course this was at least 12 years ago so perhaps they have caught up with the times by now.
One thing’s for sure, they do know how to make a quality product, and they have stocked this picnic basket full of them.
If you’ve never made homemade chicken salad before, you must. It’s SO good. I like to keep mine simple. Just mix chopped cooked chicken (or canned chicken works just fine) with enough mayonnaise to make it a desirable consistency. You can dilute it a bit with fresh lemon juice or white wine. Then add some chopped celery and salt and pepper to taste. Throw in a fresh herb like tarragon for extra flavor. And don’t skimp on salt.
WIN IT! Leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite family picnic spot, and you’ll be entered to win a picnic basket stocked with ingredients for summer entertaining!

We have 2 favorite spots – one is our backyard and the other is a park near our house. It’s right on the water, so the view is lovely, too
Holly at Tropic of Mom on June 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Gosh, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a real picnic. My family had a nice breakfast picnic at a park around the corner from our home where there are a bridge that leads to a boardwalk through a forested area, ducks swimming in the water and a wildflower walk. I’d definitely go back there for a picnic.

We live across the street from Lake Michigan. There are many picnic spots that we love to frequent over the summer. Its great cheap entertainment for the family!

We picnic at the beach! It hilarious to watch Bruiser eat just as much sand as food! It’s even better to watch him explore other people’s food bags when he tires of ours – he earned the nickname “seagull” last year!

We like to head to the beach. One spot we frequent has a great little playground right on the beach, with covered picnic tables. It’s about an hour away, so a nice weekend day trip.

We love picnics! They can be an all day affair or just a hour or two.
Last summer Hubby would suprise me with a picnic lunch at work. There is a park right accross from my building and we go there every time. It is simple, but still close to what I need.
Thanks

we have a big park a few blocks away from our house that is the perfect distance to bike to, has tons of grass and trees, and is great for picnics! =)

We favorite picnic spot is on a big rock on one of the streams that leads into the New River that is right under the New River Gorge bridge. It is private, plenty of rocks for climbing one, in view of a beautiful waterfall and an hour from my house. How is that for perfect.

Growing up we would go to a local park that was never very nice and our parents would pick up a bucket of KFC and call it a picnic! Now we go to the lake by our house and pack a real picnic and it is wonderful. In fact we just might do that tonight! Thanks! Oh and PS glad you are feeling better!

We ride out Bikes up to The Suwanee Greenway here in GA and Oh is it Beautiful! Hubby and I have GREAT Bikes and I even have a basket on the front of mine with a Big Obnoxious Bell! He has a Bike rack on the back of his bike that would really hold this picnic basket nicely! We always bring lunch with us and after riding we find a nice spot and cozy up and have lunch! It is really relaxing and beautiful, especially for a Tree hugger like me!!

we’re hoping to go to millenium park in downtown chicago this summer for one of their summer concert series. we’ll bring a picnic, sit on the grass and listen to the beautiful music. at least, that’s how i dream it will happen. i know the reality will be crying kids and/or hyper kids but we’ll give it a shot anyway!

The beach is always our favorite place to take a picnic. Despite the sand getting everywhere, we love salami, cheese, and crackers, nectarines, and lemonade by the ocean!

We love to picnic in the state park across the street. My husband and I had our engagement pictures taken there. It’s beautiful. Thanks for the chance.

Our favorite picnic spot is a nearby park that has lots of shade and a great playground for the kiddos.
Also, I like to add grapes to my chicken salad. It’s the only way I can get the kiddos to eat it.

I like going out to the country and visit the battlefields of VA. IT’s very pretty and quiet and I love not hearing the sound of cars.

The backyard or the park
Diane on June 9th, 2009 at 10:13 am
We live really close to the erie canal in Brockport and they have fields and picnic tables all around. We like to bring our grill, or sandwiches and watch the ducks who are very,,, um friendly – they like to stick their heads right in my purse looking for food! Once they tried to steal our tongs for slipping burgers!
Susan Miller on June 9th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Our favorite picnic spot is right in our backyard. My children think it is the greatest thing ever to picnic in their “treehouse” (the fort on their playset).
lee on June 10th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
i have a pond in my backyard, surrounded by trees. we like to picnic in the shade there, but don’t forget the insect repellant!
Jenn on June 11th, 2009 at 5:57 am
We love to pack a picnic and go down to the beach to watch the sunset. It’s amazing how we live 20 minutes from the beach and yet we don’t get to do it very often. But when we do, we sure enjoy it!
Christine on June 11th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Schoodic Point in Maine is the best picnic spot! So beautiful!
Crystal on June 12th, 2009 at 10:22 am
When I was younger our favourite picnic spot was up North just outside of Owensound, Ontario.
My boyfriend and I have 2 favourite picnic spots, one is at High Park and the other at Rouge River, both here in Toronto!!
